How does tchoukball work?

Tchoukball is a mixed team sport played on a handball court, with two teams of seven players. The aim of the game is to bounce the ball off a frame without the opposing team catching it.
The principle of the game is simple:

  • A team in possession of the ball has three passes to move into shooting position.
  • She scores a point if the ball bounces on the ground outside the forbidden zone and within the boundaries of the field after touching the trampoline.
  • The opposing team scores a point if the ball rebounds into the forbidden zone, if the ball touches the player who took the shot, or if the ball is intercepted by an opposing player.

What equipment is needed to play tchoukball?

Here's what you need to play tchoukball:

  • Two tchoukball frames: The frames are inclined trampolines with an elastic net. They are placed at each end of the pitch. They are made of steel or aluminium and measure around 1.80 metres high and 1.20 metres wide. The net is made up of elastic bands that allow the ball to bounce in a predictable manner.
  • A tchoukball: The tchoukball is similar to a handball, but lighter and smaller. Made of leather or synthetic. They measure around 60 centimetres in circumference and weigh around 300 grams.
  • Sport chasubles: These enable referees to distinguish between the players of the two teams.

How to choose your tchoukball?

  • When choosing your tchoukball, here are the criteria to consider:
For introductory sessions, it's best to opt for inflatable foam or high-density foam tchoukballs with an easy-to-grip surface, limiting the risk of injury in the event of impact.
  • For competitions and matches, opt for composite leather balls. They offer superior speed and more precise trajectories. It is also possible to use handballs with similar characteristics to those specially designed for tchoukball.
