Bodybuilding discs: how to choose the right one?

Choosing a weight training disc is a decisive step when you want to train seriously, whether in the gym or at home. As a sports equipment expert, I often find that buying weights is seen as a mere formality. However, acquiring the right equipment conditions not only the quality of your workouts, but also your safety, the durability of your equipment and your progress. At GladiatorFit.ch, the Swiss reference store for your sports equipment, we know that piling loads on a bar is not enough to achieve results. Working with free weights requires you to think strategically about the type of load you’re going to lift.

Whether you’re a seasoned athlete preparing for competitions or a beginner looking to create a small training space, today’s market offers a multitude of technical options. Between materials, diameters, thicknesses and coatings, it’s easy to get lost. The aim of this guide is to act as your personal sales advisor: together we’ll decipher the technique, compare the different models and help you choose the equipment perfectly suited to your objectives and budget, so that your investment lasts in the long term.

Not all weights are created equal, and each type of disc has been designed to meet precise biomechanical and material constraints. Before filling your basket, it’s essential to understand the characteristics of the three main disc families you’ll find on the market.

Cast-iron discs: timeless classics

Cast-iron weights represent the very essence of traditional strength training. BRUTE, painted, hammered or chrome-plated, they have been equipping gyms for decades. Their main advantage lies in their compactness. As cast iron is a very dense material, a 20 kg disc will be much thinner than its rubber equivalent. This thinness makes it possible to load a maximum amount of weight onto the sleeves of a barbell or the spikes of a convergent machine, which is ideal for very strong athletes practicing powerlifting or pure bodybuilding.

Cast iron is perfect for traditional strength training where movements are controlled and the bar is not supposed to be released violently to the floor (such as bench press, controlled squat or biceps curl). What’s more, these discs are generally the most economical option for getting started. At GladiatorFit.ch, we offer models often equipped with ergonomic handles (grip discs), making handling and loading much safer and more pleasant on a daily basis.

Rubber bumpers: ideal for crosstraining

If you’ve ever watched a high-intensity functional training competition, you’re bound to have seen bumper plates. Unlike cast iron, these discs are made from virgin, recycled or urethane rubber, molded around a central metal insert. Their main feature? Whatever their weight (from 5 kg to 25 kg), they all have the same standardized outside diameter (generally 450 mm). Only their thickness varies.

This unique design absorbs massive shocks when the bar is dropped from the shoulders or top of the head. Bumpers are purely and simply mandatory for crosstraining and ballistic movements. Using cast iron for this type of practice would not only destroy your bar, but also the floor of your training area, while presenting a major risk of unpredictable rebound. Rubber protects your equipment, reduces noise and ensures safe training, even at muscular failure.

Fractional disks: for precise progression

Often overlooked by beginners, fractional disks are the secret of athletes who make continuous progress. These small discs, ranging in weight from 0.5 kg to 2.5 kg, enable the sacred principle of progressive overload to be applied with great precision. Indeed, when reaching a plateau on demanding exercises such as the military bench press or squat, adding 5 kg at once (2.5 kg on each side) is often impossible.

Thanks to fractional discs, you can increase the load on the bar by as little as 1 kg, or as much as 0.5 kg in total. This micro-load helps to overcome psychological and physical strength levels without altering execution technique. It’s an essential addition to the arsenal of any good exerciser.
